Gala Bhai

All families

On behalf of the first-year IB students, we are thrilled to share a very special project we are currently preparing: the Bhai Charity Gala, which will take place on Friday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m. at school.

As in previous years, all the funds raised will be personally delivered to the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, an organization we had the privilege of visiting during our recent trip to India. For decades, the foundation has been working tirelessly to transform lives in the most disadvantaged areas of the country. This year, our goal is to support the construction of a school in Anantapur, India.

To make this event a success, we need your generosity and support. We would be extremely grateful for any kind of donation or contribution.

In particular, we are currently looking for the following items:

  • A leg of ham to serve during the gala
  • Cheeses, cold meats, and other delicacies
  • An industrial deep fryer to prepare our already famous croquettes
  • Soft drinks, or other beverages
  • A photo booth (or materials for a fun photo corner)
  • And of course, any other product or detail you think might help us raise more funds for the cause

Every little contribution counts and would mean a lot to us. If you’re able to help with any of these items, we would really appreciate it if you could reply to this email and let us know. Remember that you can always support us simply by attending this beautiful and meaningful event https://www.solindiarizate.org

Thank you in advance for your generosity and continued support — we truly couldn’t do this without you!

The importance of limits on the use of electronic devices

All families

The negative effects of excessive use of electronic devices on health are well known. Sleep disorders, difficulty concentrating while studying, sedentary lifestyle-related obesity, and even anxiety or depression are some of the most common issues. For this reason, many studies recommend limiting screen time for children and adolescents to a maximum of two hours per day.

It is therefore both necessary and important to set boundaries around this practice. Doing so helps our children better manage their screen time, while also teaching them how to establish their own limits—so they’ll be able to regulate themselves independently in the future. As parents, we often find it challenging to achieve this. On one hand, we tend to see a child using a device as entertained, quiet, even still… which we may interpret as a sign that “everything is fine”—although the reality can be very different. On the other hand, our children will often do everything they can to extend their screen time as much as possible. This is when we must act with kindness and firmness—the two key ingredients to setting respectful and effective boundaries. Here are the steps we recommend:

1. Open a dialogue.Children and teens need to understand why these limits are necessary. The core message should be how much we love them and care about their health and wellbeing—this is the reason we want to limit their screen time. Providing information is key. Some helpful resources include

2. Reach agreements. Once children understand why limits are important, it’s time to agree on specific screen time schedules. These should be adapted to each family’s routines, while keeping the following recommendations in mind:

  • It is highly recommended to stop using devices 1 to 2 hours before bedtime, as screen light disrupts sleep rhythms.
  • Decide on a specific place in the house (e.g., a drawer or cabinet) where devices must be left at the agreed time, turned off.
  • Agreements should also include consequences for exceeding screen time. For example: 5 extra minutes of use today could mean 10 fewer minutes allowed tomorrow.

3. Write the agreements down and post them somewhere visible in the house, such as a hallway or fridge, to serve as a daily reminder. Younger children can help by drawing pictures that represent the agreements.

4. Supervise and follow through. Daily supervision is essential. If the schedule is not followed one day, the agreed consequence should be applied the next day. If no consequence is enforced, the agreements lose value, as do the limits and the message we are trying to convey about the importance of our children’s health. They need to see that their wellbeing matters to us.

5. Celebrate progress. Once the agreements have been successfully followed for a while, take time to celebrate! Enjoy the extra time gained by doing a shared activity that everyone enjoys—play a fun game, complete a puzzle, read a story together… and acknowledge the effort made by the whole family to care for their health.
